175 Pound Cobia Likely To Overtake The World Record Crown… by 40 Pounds!

On February 8th, Koby Duncan hooked up to a Cobia that stands to beat the current world record by 40 pounds!  Out for a day of fishing to celebrate a buddy’s birthday, Koby was working a jig head and soft bait off the bottom when it got inhaled by the behemoth.  Against the advice of that captain who suggested a few times that he likely had a large Ray and to cut the line, Koby kept wearing away and boat the the potential record breaking fish after about 15 minutes.

Once they returned to the dock, the crew hauled the fish over to Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative to pop it on a certified scale. Weighmaster Paul Cramer certified the fish weighing 175.49 pounds, with an overall length of 77.56 inches and a girth of 40.94 inches.

The current  IGFA all tackle world record weighed 135 pounds 9 ounces and was caught from Shark Bay in Western Australia in 1985 by angler Peter Goulding.
