Delaware Bay
The bitterly cold weather kept anglers off the ocean and bay and the ponds I saw in Sussex County had a thin layer of ice, so I expect freshwater anglers didn’t do much fishing either. The good news is the nasty weather won’t last forever and as soon as we have the annual January thaw folks will be back out fishing.
In the Upper-Bay area it will be white perch and the beginning of the yellow perch spawning run. Spillways will be the best areas to fish with small shad darts tipped with Fish Bites or small, live minnows.
The Middle-Bay will have the same fishery with perch available in the tidal creeks and rivers.
Not much difference in the Lower-Bay with the exception of rockfish if they are still around after the cold weather passes. They were here just before the cold hit, but in all probability have moved south.
Indian River Inlet
There should still be some tog left at Indian River Inlet once the air temperature warms enough for people to fish without the threat of frostbite.
Getting bait may be a problem. I suggest you call around to tackle shops before heading out to make sure you can secure a supply of green crabs.
