FISHING REPORT: Kittery Trading Post(ME) 2/7/22

Kittery Trading Post – Kittery, ME
2/7/22

We are hearing great reports from Sebago and Moosehead Lakes. Lake trout and brook trout respectively. It seems as though Moosehead has become somewhat of a destination for winter brook trout anglers over the past few years, but for those who enjoy catching lake trout, Sebago might be in your future plans. We had one shop tell us of a slow day of lake trout fishing being “only” 54 fish between four people. Most of the talk in New Hampshire was of the upcoming Great Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby February 12 and 13. Derby participants can fish any public lake or pond in the state for their chance at a piece of the over $50,000 in cash prizes. Ice reports are consistent and good from most places we are hearing about, with Sebago being the exception. We’re told that as of this writing, most of the north end of the lake was still open. Be careful out there.

MAINE:

Greg Cutting at Jordan’s Store in Sebago told us that Sebago still isn’t completely iced in yet. He did say that there was about 4-inches of white snow ice on the southern end of the Shoals. “Some guys left here yesterday afternoon and headed to the Camel’s Pasture and caught 19 cusk up to 8-pounds,” he said. Greg told us that the lake trout fishing has been good overall, and most catches are coming in from 160-feet to 180-feet of water. He says that chartreuse tail and glow bodies from Bass Assassin and DOA paddletails are doing well, but it’s important to make sure that the hook is back far enough for the lake trout to get it when they bite, so you may need to trim your plastic down a bit. He says jigging too much seems to be hurting some. He recommends not lifting your lure off the bottom very far or very often, and watch your rod tip. Greg says you still need to exercise caution when venturing out with ice conditions so variable.
