Been a while since we seen Nick and Glenda Tewell from Locust, NC but Friday they were able to meet us at the Southmont wildlife boat ramp to go catch some crappies. The bite started off slow, I could see the crappies attack their baits but they were just curious and most would eventually just swim away without cooperating with us.
As the water continues to cool I kept working my way to deeper water. There I found more interested crappies that were more into biting but with a week or two of continuous cold fronts the bite had also cooled down some as well.
But, on the good side the quality of fish was better today than lately with nearly all 48 crappies we kept were close to or over a pound+. I’m starting to find more crappies now starting to school together in bigger schools making their way to deeper water to ride out the winter months. Most of our fish today were schooled up in 20+ feet of water, I’ve included a few livescope shots of the depths and amount of crappies. Winter time crappie fishing can be some of the best crappie fishing you’ve had all year.
Next week doesn’t look promising to get the weather to fish comfortably all week long. Hope we get a few days in between all the forecast rain .We will just have to see how it goes, a little rain in mid summer is welcomed,but, this time of year it is usually a cold and miserable day, but,if someone wants to fish in the cold rain, we’ll accommodate them if no lightening is involved.
