Opah, Opah, & Away!

Deep Sea fishing is super fun for many reasons, one of which being you never know what’s ripping drag on the other end of the line. Imagine hooking up and fighting a fish for 35 or 40 minutes to look over the side and see an enormous orange sorbet colored, circle of a fish laying broadside to the boat! Well, there it is… an Opah. Opahs, members of the genus (Lampridae), are are often times referred to as Moonfish due to their shape and overall appearance and they can grow to well over 100 pounds. For a good shot at hooking up with an Opah, You’ll need to fish in the same types of water as you would for Tuna and Billfish on the US West Coast as they are known to school together – especially with Big Eyes and Black Marlin. You can catch Opahs on bait since they eat smaller fish like mackerel and have a core diet that includes mostly squid, but anglers find most success in using heavy jigs to get the lines tight.

Take a Peek at the video and pictures below for a closer look.
