ASA Advocating for Smart Fisheries Policies in the Farm Bill

ASA’s Mike Leonard and Connor Bevan participated in a Farm Bill fly-in event on Capitol Hill to advocate for smart fisheries and conservation policies within this year’s Farm Bill. ASA hopes to see the Farm Bill’s Conservation Title expand sportfishing access and improve the health of fish throughout the nation’s lands and waters. Learn more 

Call on your Senators to Cosponsor the America’s Outdoor Recreation Act!

As you learned last week, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee unanimously approved the America’s Outdoor Recreation Act. Although the bill is an important legislative package that will improve public land access and recreational fishing opportunities, it still needs more Senate cosponsors. South Atlantic Red Snapper Season Limited to Just Two Days

Last week, NOAA Fisheries announced that this year’s South Atlantic recreational red snapper season will only run for two days, July 14th and 15th. We are disappointed in NOAA for making this decision, which is contrary to the real-world indicators showing how healthy the fishery’s population is. We encourage the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, NOAA Fisheries and the states along the southern Atlantic to work toward innovative approaches to management and data collection improvements that provide reasonable harvest access for anglers while continuing to benefit the red snapper population. Learn more

ASA’s Atlantic Fisheries Policy Director Mike Waine was recently interviewed on two podcasts to discuss how the Atlantic Fishery’s Management Council’s emergency management action helps the striped bass population and puts the iconic fishery on the road to rebuilding.
